Claypool foi capaz de desenvolver sua técnica slap ouvindo baixistas como Geddy Lee, Stanley Clarke e Larry Graham. Ele também comprou o seu primeiro baixo Carl Thompson,de quatro cordas. Ele agora possui seis, incluindo um fretless 6-cordas chamado Rainbow Bass.
